Natural Head Lice Home Remedies

While it is clearly understood that treating head lice should be taken seriously and done correctly, some people are concerned about the products available for use.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends Nix as the most effective treatment for head lice.  While many people agree that this may be the best and really only way to treat for head lice, others do not like using what is effectively a pesticide.  People are now looking for alternatives and are investigating many natural head lice home remedies.

You may be concerned about chemical use in and around your home or your child may have allergies.  If you are looking for the simplest alternative, you may consider just combing or picking the lice (the live adult insects) and nits (the eggs) out using tweezers and a lice comb.  To be sure that you have gotten them all, this would need to be done over several days in a row and can be extremely time consuming.   You may also need some follow up to ensure that you have not missed any eggs.

As another alternative natural home remedy, you can also put something on the child’s hair to smother the lice.  The most popular alternatives include olive oil, mayonnaise, or Vaseline.  These should be thoroughly worked into the child’s hair and left on overnight under a shower cap.  This is then washed out the next day.  It can be messy, but some experts believe that this works since the work to get the product out of the child’s hair is so involved that this actually removes the lice and nits as well.  Vinegar can be used to rinse out the greasy substances with the added benefit that it gives any new eggs a harder time sticking to the hair.

There is also a non-pesticide prescription treatment for head lice called Ulesfia.  Your child’s doctor can supply this prescription medication.  You need to saturate the hair with this product and then wash it out ten minutes later.  It is designed to suffocate the respiratory spiracles of the head lice.  This process needs to be reapplied seven days later.

There are less proven methods of removing lice from your child involving herbal home remedies.  They are typically made with tree oil or other natural essential oils.  These products are not regulated by the FDA and in many cases are not proven to work.

The most direct home remedy is to make the effort to prevent the problem before it occurs.  Girls can wear their hair up and use hair gel.  Children should not share any items that may come into contact with their scalp such as hats, hair ties, combs, and scarves.  It is important to remember that lice do not have wings and must be passed by direct contact.  You should always be careful and on the lookout for possible transfer.

Be sure to learn how to identify head lice, nits, and nymphs correctly so that you know exactly what problem you are facing.  Once you understand the problem, there are many avenues available for treatment.
